OUR STUDENTS
Deciding on a career in truck driving is a great career move for someone just starting out or starting over. Our students range in age from 18 years old to those in their 60's. There are no typical students here. We train women and men from all races and religions, states and countries, high school graduates to people with doctorate degrees to those with varying financial circumstances.

I
received training as an IT professional with an Associate of Applied
Science in Information Management Systems and graduated in September
of 2001. After 9/11, the economy and job market in the IT industry bottomed
out. I wanted a job that was not dependant on a fluctuating economy
so I made the transition to the transportation industry...
Before
training at Transportation Center for Excellence, I was a Software Engineer
with a 4-year degree and 20 years experience in the field. I ended
up encountering problems with the computer industry; I was working for
a start up company where 2 out of 3 of our biggest customers bellied
up and the company folded... 
In
Ethiopia I used to drive a passenger bus, but I wanted to learn how
to drive a truck to make a better living. I came to America 3 ½
years ago and since then I've gotten a 2-year degree in General Mechanics.
I was doing a variety of odd jobs before I found out about Transportation

After
training with Transportation Center for Excellence I got a job working
for Hernandez Trucking. At 23 years old and after only a few months
driving with them I'm now an owner operator. I used to drive tow truck
and enjoyed that so I decided to get a Class A license. I took the four-week
program at Transportation Center for Excellence and thought it was a
good amount of training to help a student be ready to test...
I
decided to get into truck driving because my dad is a truck driver.
I liked the idea of being my own boss, experiencing different scenery
and the driving itself, but I didn't have much confidence. I thought

I'm
40 years old and I had been a police officer for 13 years and I was
looking to do something different. What else can you do with a degree

I
took the Truck Driver Training Program with Externship and was able to
pay for it with a combination of sponsorship from Hired, a non-profit
employment organization, and a low interest State loan. The staff at Transportation
Center for Excellence was really nice and willing to work with students
and explain trucking information. They seemed like they enjoyed it. I
had the pleasure to learn from instructors who were great, very understanding
and willing to answer any questions the students had....
